Barbara G. Engel

Welcome!

At the risk of sounding narcissistic, I will introduce myself.  I am currently a Broome Community College Student, studying the fine art of making a machine as stupid as a computer do my bidding.  This is my second career, my first being Medical Illustration.

I have a B.F.A. in Medical Illustration; however, after struggling for many years with that career path, I decided to pursue Computer Science.  I am taking Calculus, programming languages and hardware - oriented classes.

This makes me rather unique in my scholastic and professional experience, and I hope to put what I have to offer to good use.

I completed my B.F.A. in 1991.  I tried very hard to get a job, but at that time the job market was decreasing in size for Medical Illustrators.  Three years and 300 resumes later, I gave up trying to get a job as a Medical Illustrator and just tried to handle my enormus student loan debt of $40,000.  I stuggled on my own for about five years, and finaly had to declare bankruptcy.  It was a hard decision to make, but I still feel like it saved my life.

I found a good job working as a server in a country club with full benefits and middle class income.  It did not , however, engage my mind or challange my abilities.  In 2001, I moved back in with my parents, who are assisting me in pursuing my new career.

After I graduate from the two year college I am currently attending, my goals are to obtain a batchlor's degree in computer science and then obtain a good entry level position. I am hoping to eventually get my doctoral degree and go into research.

I can bring several positive things to the Computer Industry. I can bring a finely tuned sense of customer service.  I have the biology and chemistry background to be able to understand the cutting edge research of carbon nanotubes, and the DNA computer. I also will have a good practical education in Electronics, Mathematics and Programming.

I am looking forward to a challenging career!

Barbara on a good day

I LOVE my job!

Semester is going well, I still have a chance at a 4.0.

My best friend roped me into helping with my high schools 20th annual reunion.
